Is There a Difference?

Sentimental

There are pairs of words that actually mean the same thing. But some people try to make out that they mean something completely different. We like one meaning (hooray!) and we don't like the other (boo!)

childish (boo)/childlike (hooray)

You get the picture.

missionary/missional

church/Ecclesia

Churchianity/Christianity

saving/salvific

community/communitas

religion/faith

truth/Truth/Ultimate Truth/a different kind of truth/absolute truth (I think we like "Truth" but not "Absolute Truth". Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell, … discovered the pulsar. … a Quaker, Science, she said, is a quest for understanding, not absolute truth.)

knowledge/wisdom/understanding

Laicidade sim, laicismo não
(@rodrigocoppe)

cleaning/cleansing

licence/liberty

lonely/alone

selfconscious/selfaware

emotion/sentimentality
(sentimentality = affected, fake, mawkish emotions. We don't have those!)

problem/challenge

can/may
